ARIEL

Promoting small scale fisheries and aquaculture transnational networking in Adriatic-Ionian macroregion

The ARIEL project is jointly promoted and developed by 9 scientific and institutional partners from 4 Countries (Italy, Croatia, Greece, and Montenegro) and focuses on Small Scale Fisheries and aquaculture, which are two key drivers for blue and sustainable growth in the Adriatic and Ionian communities. Despite their relevance, these sectors face the same challenges of maritime spatial planning, environmental and socio-economic sustainability, better conditions for the adoption of innovation and dissemination of scientific knowledge, and more effective cooperation between entrepreneurs, academia and policy makers. In this context, ARIEL’s transnational approach catalyzes joint efforts to address this complex ecological, economic and social challenge by supporting the development of a transnational “critical mass” and providing common skills, tools, and methods that accompany the process of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture innovation and networking in the Adriatic and Ionian Sea basins.
The overall objective of ARIEL is to promote solutions (technological and non-technological) for innovation in Small Scale Fisheries and aquaculture in the Adriatic-Ionian basin by serving as a knowledge network and carrying out a range of transferable activities to better understand threats and solutions for more effective and sustainable management of policies and practices. At first, ARIEL will implement innovation audits on Small Scale Fisheries and aquaculture enterprises taking into account research, policy and economic aspects that outline the state of innovation and future development scenario. Based on this result, the project will test innovative pilot solutions jointly defined by enterprises and research institutes. Innovation brokering events will facilitate the transfer of R&D into concrete and feasible actions for Small Scale Fisheries and aquaculture actors, accompanying their aggregation and cooperation process. The adoption of open innovation in Small Scale Fisheries and aquaculture will also be fostered by the creation of the ARIEL platform to help networking and collaboration around innovative ideas and solutions during and beyond the life of the project, fostering ongoing knowledge sharing and transnational dialogue among actors. ARIEL partners will then develop a joint research agenda for Small Scale Fisheries and aquaculture and a Service Charter for Innovation, a strategic and multidisciplinary action plan that defines common priorities and lines of research, areas for improvement, knowledge-based solutions, and actions to successfully address key challenges related to innovation and sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture for the coming years in the Adriatic and Ionian Sea region.

Research Projects

The research activities of the Institute are carried out in the context of research, development and innovation projects, both national and international, based on regional funding programs (POR FEAMPA - Regional Operational Program of the European Maritime Affairs Fisheries Fund and Aquaculture and POR FESR - Regional Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund) or ministerial (PRIN - Projects of relevant national interest, PNRA - National Research Program in Antarctica, PO FEAMPA - National Operational Program European Maritime Affairs Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund) , programs for European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg), direct funding programs of the European Commission (Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe, Life, JPI - Joint Programming Initiatives, ERA-NET Cofund) and thematic collaboration initiatives managed by international organizations such as, for example , the FAO - GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean). The Institute also develops funded projects in the context of collaborations with private companies in the sectors of the blue economy as well as technology transfer and research results. Research projects, mainly of a collaborative nature, are developed through a wide network of partners that include major Italian and foreign research institutions and universities.
