CLEAN&CARE

Monitoring, restoration and management of the Natura 2000 Site - Lagoon of Lesina

The Lesina Lagoon has been, like most European lagoons, the subject of human misuse. All economic and recreational activities (fishing, hunting, agriculture, tourism) related to the lagoon, in addition to flood events, have generated waste material resulting from bad habits or improper management of municipal waste. The presence of litter in such aquatic environments is of great concern as a potential source of contamination to the ecosystem and the entire food web (Alomar et al., 2016; Fossi et al., 2016). Every year millions of tons of solid waste (“marine litter”) are introduced into marine ecosystems (UNEP, 2016), becoming an increasing threat to the health of the ecosystem itself. The actions of this project will be carried out in the form of cooperation between CNR IRBIM, Municipality of Lesina, Region of Puglia and ARPA Puglia. The integrated research/governance approach can represent an interesting opportunity (tool) for the Entities directly or indirectly involved (CNR, Municipality, Gargano Park Authority, ARPA Puglia and Apulia Region) in ensuring the achievement of the common objective of Good Environmental Status (GES), as contemplated by the European Directives (MSFD and WFD 2000/60), by facilitating the definition of management guidelines useful for the formulation of a Regional Regulation of fishery in the inland waters of the Lagoon of Lesina.

Research Projects

The research activities of the Institute are carried out in the context of research, development and innovation projects, both national and international, based on regional funding programs (POR FEAMPA - Regional Operational Program of the European Maritime Affairs Fisheries Fund and Aquaculture and POR FESR - Regional Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund) or ministerial (PRIN - Projects of relevant national interest, PNRA - National Research Program in Antarctica, PO FEAMPA - National Operational Program European Maritime Affairs Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund) , programs for European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg), direct funding programs of the European Commission (Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe, Life, JPI - Joint Programming Initiatives, ERA-NET Cofund) and thematic collaboration initiatives managed by international organizations such as, for example , the FAO - GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean). The Institute also develops funded projects in the context of collaborations with private companies in the sectors of the blue economy as well as technology transfer and research results. Research projects, mainly of a collaborative nature, are developed through a wide network of partners that include major Italian and foreign research institutions and universities.
