Infrastructures
Research activities at IRBIM CNR are carried out through a network of more than 30 laboratories and infrastructures, which are located in the different Research Centers that make up the Institute. Through this network, IRBIM CNR promotes and stimulates basic and applied research, the use and development of innovative methodologies, collaboration and multidisciplinarity, and the exchange of researchers and human capital in Italy and the world to produce knowledge and knowledge useful in contributing to progress and innovation. In synergy with other scientific institutions, IRBIM CNR participates in internationally excellent Research Infrastructures, making data accessible and developing new technologies for the study of marine ecosystems and biodiversity. Scientific activities conducted in IRBIM CNR’s network of laboratories and infrastructures stimulate and promote partnerships with industry to foster development, research and innovation in the marine field, and to strengthen scientific excellence and technology transfer.
European Research Infrastructures
The European Research Infrastructures provide resources and services to international research communities to carry out research and promote innovation. They include primary scientific equipment or instrument sets; scientific collections, archives or data; computer systems and communication networks; and any other research and innovation infrastructure of a unique nature that is accessible to external users. Through EU Research Infrastructures it is possible to reduce the fragmentation of research and innovation ecosystems, avoid duplication of effort, coordinate the development and utilization of national research infrastructures, define strategies for new pan-European research infrastructures consolidated at the intergovernmental or national level, as well as join forces internationally to build and operate large-scale infrastructures to meet global challenges.
Through the establishment of ERIC – European Research Infrastructure Consortium, or specific research infrastructure consortia, the specific legal form is created to facilitate the establishment and operation of research infrastructure.
IRBIM CNR participates in several EU Research Infrastructures in the field of marine sciences, and in Data Networks and Observatories dedicated to the sea.
EMBRC (European Marine Biology Resource Centre)
EMBRC (European Marine Biology Resource Center) is an EU infrastructure dedicated to marine biology that provides services for the development of scientific research of excellence at European level. EMBRC supports applied and basic research by providing marine biological resources and/or access to marine environments useful for research and industry, also with the aim of developing blue biotechnologies, preserving marine biodiversity and promoting the management and sustainable use of marine biological resources to support the country's "Blue Growth". Italy is one of the founding countries of EMBRC along with 8 other European countries. The Italian node EMBRC-IT brings together the major Research Bodies and Universities in the Country that deal with marine sciences.
EMODnet Chemistry
EMODnet (European Marine Observation and Data Network) is a long-term initiative of the European Commission, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), and represents a network of Organizations working together to observe the sea, process data according to international standards, and make that information freely available and interoperable. EMODnet provides access to European marine data on seven disciplinary themes: bathymetry, biology, chemistry, geology, human activities, physics, and benthic habitats. IRBIM CNR participates in EMODnet Chemistry (Program coordinated by OGS - National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics), which involves a network of 45 marine research and monitoring Institutes and oceanographic data management experts, with the goal of providing easy access to marine chemical data, and to validated and harmonized, standardized and reliable datasets, data highly relevant to assessing the health of the marine ecosystem according to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
