Supporto all’attuazione del programma Marine Strategy 2021-2023

Scientific collaboration to carry out shared activities on the issues of Marine Strategy for the purpose of achieving the priority objectives of Directive 2008/56/EC transposed by Legislative Decree. 190/2010

Through a Research Agreement between CNR IRBIM and ISPRAare provided:
Fishery-dependent data collection on bycatch: technical and scientific support for fishery-dependent data collection on the bycatch of selachas, sea turtles, marine mammals, and avifauna. These data will be collected with reference to Descriptors 3 and 1 with the aim of consolidating the estimated bycatch rate for the main national métiers (e.g., trawl, longline, gillnet). The collection of these data is necessary to make monitoring program D03-03 “Fishery-dependent data collection MADIT-D03-03, MICIT-D03-03” operational. The data set will contribute to the estimation of D1C1 type indicators (bycatch/bycatch mortality rate) with activities to be conducted in the context of the Central Mediterranean Ionian and Adriatic sub-regions. The data will also contribute to the estimation of indicators for the other D1 criteria. Scientific responsible for this activity are Alessandro Lucchetti and Claudio Vasapollo for GSA 17 and Sergio Vitale for GSA 16.
Recreational fishing: technical and scientific support for the development of a series of activities aimed at characterizing and assessing the extent of recreational fishing at sea on the Italian territory and its impact on biodiversity and fishery resources based on the methods developed in the 2019-2020 pilot monitoring. Characterizing the extent and assessment of the impact of recreational fishing in Italian marine waters will allow estimating the mortality induced by this activity on commercial resources (and, potentially, refine the parameters of the models associated with the assessment of D3C1, D3C2, D3C3). In addition, the data collected will contribute to the assessment of coastal fish communities, also in relation to the GES assessments of Descriptor 1. Scientific responsible for this activity are Fabio Grati and Luca Bolognini.
Epimegabenthic communities: activities aimed at studying epimegabenthic communities subjected to physical perturbations, the subject of interest under Descriptor 6. Scientific responsible for this activity are Vita Gancitano and Daniela Massi for GSA 16, Paola Rinelli and Daniela Giordano for GSA 10, and Giuseppe Scarcella and Michela Martinelli for GSA 17.
Indicator testing: technical and scientific support for the development of methods for analyzing time series of data and defining reference thresholds. The development and testing of D3 indicators is aimed at evaluating for individual stocks the primary criteria D3C1 (fishing mortality rate indicator), D3C2 (spawning stock biomass indicator) and D3C3 (age and size distribution indicator). This activity will be associated with parameter estimates to support the implementation of Descriptor 1 criteria with regard to non commercial species (D1C2, D1C3) and criterion D1C1 specifically for species of conservation value. Methods of integrating the assessments obtained for individual stocks and species under D3 and D1 will also be tested in order to overcome “one out all out” approaches. The reference areas are the Adriatic and Ionian sub-regions (GSA 17 and 18) Central Mediterranean (GSA 16). Scientific responsible for this activity are Giuseppe Scarcella for GSA 17 and 18 and Fabio Fiorentino for GSA 16.

Research Projects

The research activities of the Institute are carried out in the context of research, development and innovation projects, both national and international, based on regional funding programs (POR FEAMPA - Regional Operational Program of the European Maritime Affairs Fisheries Fund and Aquaculture and POR FESR - Regional Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund) or ministerial (PRIN - Projects of relevant national interest, PNRA - National Research Program in Antarctica, PO FEAMPA - National Operational Program European Maritime Affairs Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund) , programs for European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg), direct funding programs of the European Commission (Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe, Life, JPI - Joint Programming Initiatives, ERA-NET Cofund) and thematic collaboration initiatives managed by international organizations such as, for example , the FAO - GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean). The Institute also develops funded projects in the context of collaborations with private companies in the sectors of the blue economy as well as technology transfer and research results. Research projects, mainly of a collaborative nature, are developed through a wide network of partners that include major Italian and foreign research institutions and universities.
