He holds a degree in Marine Biology and Oceanography (110/110) at the Polytechnic University of Marche, and a PhD in Ecology and Marine Biology at the same university. After graduating, he was involved as scholar and research fellow in several research projectsat the National Research Council, Institute of Marine Sciences of Ancona (CNR ISMAR), now Institute for Marine Biological Resources and Biotechnology (CNR IRBIM). He has been involved for years with issues relating to the exploitation of fisheries resources and their management, actively participating in FAO, STECF and ICES working groups, providing scientific opinions. He authored over 80 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and over 200 national and international technical reports.
