ECOSS has the participation of ten partners coordinated by CNR ISMAR. The main objective of the project is the establishment of the ecological observing system in the Adriatic Sea (“ECOlogical observing system in the Adriatic Sea”: ECOAdS), shared between Italy and Croatia, which can integrate ecological and oceanographic research with conservation strategies of marine Natura 2000 sites. The ECOAdS will build on existing infrastructure, data and knowledge in the area and develop specific case studies, with the aim of improving the conservation status and extent of marine Natura 2000 sites. Connections and synergies between key management questions for the conservation of Natura 2000 sites, ecological variables and oceanographic processes will be analyzed and developed, based on connectivity between habitats and species in coastal and offshore waters. This will also highlight what connections, already in place or to be developed, may exist between the major directives in the marine and conservation fields (WFD, MSFD and HBD).
The main objective of the ECOSS project is the construction of the ecological observatory system in the Adriatic Sea (ECOAdS). Through the construction of ECOAdS, the project should contribute to improving the conservation status of marine Natura 2000 habitats and target species with a long-term strategy.
Specifically, the project intends to:
1. Develop six case studies, based on available data and information, connecting ecological and oceanographic variables with needs related to the conservation of habitats and target species
2. Define a system of ecological indicators that integrate conservation needs and environmental quality, also highlighting the links between the directives (WFD, MSFD and HBD)
3. Build a stable data management infrastructure, in accordance with the principles of open science, to maximize the transferability of project results
4. Develop and consolidate a “public engagement” process, involving key civil society actors, to align project activities with social-ecological demands.
