Scientific technical support for the sustainable management of the clam resource (Chamelea gallina)

The clam (Chamelea gallina L., 1758) is a widespread species throughout the Mediterranean. In Italy it is particularly abundant along the coasts of the central-northern Adriatic and is one of the most important commercial molluscs. This research project is aimed at supporting the Regional Administration (Marche Region) in the management of this fishing activity. Surveys of the clam resource will be conducted in order to assess the state of the same, in addition a data collection system will be developed on commercial landings and fishing effort. The information collected during the sampling, combined with the fishing effort and position data of the vessels, will allow to formulate opinions on the management of bivalve molluscs based on scientific evidence.

he objective is to provide the technical-scientific support necessary for the fulfillment of the provisions of article 1 of the Regional Law n. 20 of 28 June 2017. The main objective of the current project proposal is to provide the Regional Administration and operators in the sector with scientific information for a rational management of clam fishing with hydraulic dredges. To this end, annual monitoring of the resource will be carried out. Moreover, having access to the information in the possession of the individual Consortia relating to the movements of the vessels and the daily quantities for each vessel, the proposal aims to study the ways in which the fishing effort to be implemented is implemented. part of the Marche fleet. These estimates will make it possible to define guidelines regarding the targeted management of the clam resource as an aid to the work carried out by the Marche consortia. The information collected during the sampling, together with the fishing effort and position data of the vessels, will also make it possible to formulate opinions on the management of bivalve molluscs based on scientific evidence.

Invasive alien species (IAS) and climate change require the development of new capacities to protect the natural capital and manage the rapid transformation of natural resources. The project proposes the development of an integrated and shared approach to studying this issue. The goal will be pursued through technical and technological advances supported by studies to improve the information management and the use of IAS as a potential economic resource

The research activities of the Institute are carried out in the context of research, development and innovation projects, both national and international, based on regional funding programs (POR FEAMPA - Regional Operational Program of the European Maritime Affairs Fisheries Fund and Aquaculture and POR FESR - Regional Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund) or ministerial (PRIN - Projects of relevant national interest, PNRA - National Research Program in Antarctica, PO FEAMPA - National Operational Program European Maritime Affairs Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund) , programs for European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg), direct funding programs of the European Commission (Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe, Life, JPI - Joint Programming Initiatives, ERA-NET Cofund) and thematic collaboration initiatives managed by international organizations such as, for example , the FAO - GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean). The Institute also develops funded projects in the context of collaborations with private companies in the sectors of the blue economy as well as technology transfer and research results. Research projects, mainly of a collaborative nature, are developed through a wide network of partners that include major Italian and foreign research institutions and universities.
