Bioremediation in the marine environment

Achievements and future challenges

Mariella Genovese

Biotechnology in the marine environment has undergone rapid growth in recent years on the exploration and use of marine resources in environmental recovery processes. In this context, hydrocarburoclastic bacteria contribute significantly to natural pollution mitigation processes. Bioremediation is an innovative technology that requires multidisciplinary approaches and close collaboration between industry and research. In this seminar, nearly 20 years after the start of research at the IRBIM Messina site in the field of microbiology and environmental biotechnology for the recovery of oil-contaminated marine areas, a state of the art and major achievements will be shown, including upcoming research challenges.
