Fish stock assessment and possible related research

Anna Perdichizzi

Fishing in the Mediterranean imbues the social fabric of entire communities that depend on it, directly or indirectly. Uniquely, the Mediterranean experiences, like other fishing regions in Europe, the difficulty of reconciling economic activity, sustainability of fishing stocks and habitat conservation. Hence the need to collect information on fish populations in order to provide national and European administrations as well as fisheries management bodies with useful data and appropriate tools to improve fisheries management and solve problems related to the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources. Current experience shows that this can be achieved through sustained investment over time in major research projects, ensuring the quality of the data collected and intensive coordination among different teams possessing in-depth knowledge of species biology. Contextually, these research projects, provide significant opportunities for observations on complementary studies related to the biology and ecology of demersal species and communities.
