Innovative technology to explore marine life: “Nanopore” Technology to sequence the marine microbiome

Marco Basili

In recent years, the use of High-Throughput Sequencing (HTS) has revolutionized the study of the marine microbiome by providing the tools to reveal the still hidden portion of microbial diversity. Among the latest technologies developed in this field, Nanopore sequencing through MinION represents one of the most promising alternatives to more established sequencing platforms (e.g., Illumina). The MinION device is the first and so far only portable sequencing instrument (90 g, about the size of a smartphone) providing portability and speed in sequencing analysis. Another major advantage of MinION is the greatly extended sequence length achievable, up to 300k bases. These innovations open the door to potentially important discoveries and future uses in both the field of microbiology and the study of multicellular organisms.
