A look at the study of sympatric speciation using Nicaraguan cichlids as a model

Carmelo Fruciano

In this talk I will briefly describe my academic experiences in Italy and abroad carried out before moving to IRBIM CNR, as well as my research plans for the near future. Among the various lines of research that I have been and am working on, I will particularly interested in the study of sympatric speciation-the formation of two species in the absence of barriers to gene flow. This study uses as a model system fishes of the genus Amphilophus – among the few widely supported cases of sympatric speciation – and a variety of data and study modalities (morphometric, genomic, and transcriptomic data obtained from animals both caught in the wild and kept in the laboratory).
