26 Years Tracking Mass Mortality Events and Marine heatwaves

Marine Heatwaves and Mass Mortality, the Role of MPAs.

Joaquim Garrabou

Climate change is causing an increase in the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves and mass mortality events of marine organisms are one of their main ecological impacts. Over the past 26 years, continuous field observations and collaborative monitoring programs across the Mediterranean have documented the unprecedented scale, recurrence, and geographic spread of of these phenomena, often exceeding even the most pessimistic projections. Guest at CNR IRBIM in Ancona (and also via

) Joaquim Garrabou gave the presentation entitled “26 Years Tracking Mass Mortality Events and Marine heatwaves”. Joaquim Garrabou is a leading expert on climate change impacts in the Mediterranean. He heads the Ecology and Resilience of Benthic Ecosystems in a Changing Ocean group at the
ICM-CSIC
in Barcelona. His research focuses on the effects of mass mortality events on rocky benthic coastal habitats and on exploring pathways to mitigate and adapt to ongoing environmental changes.
