The EM4SSF project, coordinated by the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and funded by the European Union, aims to enhance knowledge on Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF), a fundamental sector that is often characterized by limited data availability.
The project’s primary goal is to develop a common framework for the collection, processing, and sharing of high‑resolution geospatial data, promoting harmonized protocols and closer cooperation among regions and research institutions. By bringing together researchers from five EU Member States—Italy, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, and Greece—EM4SSF will work to address major knowledge gaps on SSF and support the adoption of advanced monitoring systems, in line with new European requirements for vessel tracking (EU Regulation 2023/2842).
The project will develop five case studies in which new data will be integrated, innovative methodologies will be tested, and fishers and local stakeholders will be directly involved in data collection and validation. This collaborative approach will help strengthen research capacity, improve data quality, and support more robust and reliable scientific advice for the sustainable management of marine resources.
