Feed Insects For Aquaculture - Formulation of experimental insect meal diets intended for the feeding of fish species of commercial interest

The project involves the University of Messina (as lead partner), IRBIM CNR of Messina, the SICILITTICA aquaculture plant and the feed industry Adragna Alimenti zootecnici Srl of Alcamo and has several phases:

Step one: setting up the experimental insect meal feeds (different levels of inclusion), preparing the rearing forms and finding the fishes;

Second phase: implementation of the experimental design in the pilot phase;

Third stage: definition of fillet quality, zootechnical performance and health status (indicators of welfare and gut histology) of species fed the experimental feeds;

Step four: choice of experimental feed to be tested on an industrial scale;

Fifth phase: feeding trial at Sicilittica;

Sixth stage: definition of fillet quality, zootechnical performance and health status (indicators of welfare and gut histology) of fish fed in the fifth stage. The same analytical screening as in Phase 3 will also be repeated;

Seventh phase: organization of workshops and thematic tables for dissemination of results.

FIFA’s ultimate goal is to promote innovation in aquaculture in order to foster sustainable resource use in aquaculture and facilitate the application of new sustainable production methods. Specifically, the objective is to evaluate the inclusion of insect meal as an alternative to fish meal in the production of extruded feeds for commercially important fish species in order to improve environmental sustainability and reduce the exploitation of natural resources while maintaining nutritional requirements, food safety and animal health.

Research Projects

The research activities of the Institute are carried out in the context of research, development and innovation projects, both national and international, based on regional funding programs (POR FEAMPA - Regional Operational Program of the European Maritime Affairs Fisheries Fund and Aquaculture and POR FESR - Regional Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund) or ministerial (PRIN - Projects of relevant national interest, PNRA - National Research Program in Antarctica, PO FEAMPA - National Operational Program European Maritime Affairs Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund) , programs for European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg), direct funding programs of the European Commission (Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe, Life, JPI - Joint Programming Initiatives, ERA-NET Cofund) and thematic collaboration initiatives managed by international organizations such as, for example , the FAO - GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean). The Institute also develops funded projects in the context of collaborations with private companies in the sectors of the blue economy as well as technology transfer and research results. Research projects, mainly of a collaborative nature, are developed through a wide network of partners that include major Italian and foreign research institutions and universities.
