I design and manage the digital infrastructure and systems supporting marine research at CNR-IRBIM in Ancona, where I have worked since 2015 and serve as IT Manager of the Institute’s Headquarters.
I am responsible for the architecture, operation and security of the Institute’s ICT infrastructure: Windows and Linux servers, virtualisation and containerisation, Active Directory and network services, storage, multi-DBMS data servers, backup planning and disaster recovery. I act as the local manager of the GARR network connection (APM), single point of contact for NOC, CERT and LIR, and I handle operational cybersecurity — next-generation firewalls, network segmentation, VPN, system hardening and vulnerability assessment. I designed and deployed the Institute’s HPC computing cluster (Slurm scheduling, containerised environments, parallel storage, JupyterHub) supporting data analysis and machine learning workloads. I am a member of the Institute’s data protection working group as reference figure for information security.
On the scientific side I develop software, relational and non-relational databases, APIs and web-GIS interfaces for the acquisition, automated quality control, visualisation and publication of oceanographic time series, following FAIR principles and interoperability standards (ERDDAP, SeaDataNet, EMODnet). I build embedded systems and low-cost IoT solutions for on-board monitoring on fishing vessels and for met-ocean observing platforms — buoys, ADCP current profilers, dataloggers — covering deployment, telemetry and maintenance, including at-sea operations; I have taken part in several oceanographic surveys, also as chief scientist.
I am responsible for the development of the Institute’s website and coordinator of the related working group, and I design and manage portals and application platforms for national and European projects. I also act as coordinator and technical lead for the Institute’s outreach and scientific events, from the IRBIM Days to conferences and Departmental workshops, handling the technical setup, direction and streaming/audience-interaction platforms. I am co-author of scientific papers, published datasets and project reports.
