Eni 1 - Attività di Monitoraggio Ambientale Offshore

Monitoring of production water from offshore platforms

A monitoring plan provided in compliance with Offshore Marine Monitoring Service Contract No. 2500041810 is currently in place. signed between ENI S.p.A. Upstream Unit – DICS and the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Chief Contractor) in RTI with CNR IRBIM, OGS, Università Politecnica delle Marche, Agrolab Ambiente, CIBM and CoNISMa. The activities carried out during the monitoring of offshore platforms located in the Adriatic Sea are aimed at verifying the possible effects as a result of the discharge of production water from offshore platforms into the sea and the absence of “danger to water and aquatic ecosystems” (Article 104, paragraph 7, of Legislative Decree No. 152 of April 3, 2006). The platform monitoring plan is carried out according to the ISPRA Guidelines approved by the Ministry of Environment and Land Protection in 2021. The Environmental Monitoring Plan is aimed at verifying the absence of hazards to water and aquatic ecosystems from the discharge of production water to the sea and therefore involves the study of biotic and abiotic parameters in the area surrounding the platform discharging to the sea. The parameters measured are those that most characterize the effluent and are measured along the water column, in marine sediments and in organisms. In addition, a complete survey by using current meters of the area where the facility is located is conducted. Monitoring activities are developed throughout the years of validity of the permit for the discharge and/or injection/reinjection of the water into deep geological units. The area covered by the environmental survey is within a 500-meter radius of the platform that is the subject of the monitoring plan, and corresponds to the buffer and safety zone of the installation, which is closed to fishery.

Research Projects

The research activities of the Institute are carried out in the context of research, development and innovation projects, both national and international, based on regional funding programs (POR FEAMPA - Regional Operational Program of the European Maritime Affairs Fisheries Fund and Aquaculture and POR FESR - Regional Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund) or ministerial (PRIN - Projects of relevant national interest, PNRA - National Research Program in Antarctica, PO FEAMPA - National Operational Program European Maritime Affairs Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund) , programs for European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg), direct funding programs of the European Commission (Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe, Life, JPI - Joint Programming Initiatives, ERA-NET Cofund) and thematic collaboration initiatives managed by international organizations such as, for example , the FAO - GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean). The Institute also develops funded projects in the context of collaborations with private companies in the sectors of the blue economy as well as technology transfer and research results. Research projects, mainly of a collaborative nature, are developed through a wide network of partners that include major Italian and foreign research institutions and universities.
