Innovative exploitation of Adriatic Reefs in order to strenghten blue economy

The Adriatic Sea is characterized by a wide variety of marine ecosystems. Natural Reefs (Natural Reefs, NR) and Artificial Reefs (AR) represent important locations for human activities related to the Blue Economy, such as recreational fishery, nautical tourism, diving, aquaculture, and small scale fishery using fixed gears. ADRIREEF has the ambition to test and apply innovative actions to assess the suitability of NR and AR for the development of sustainable activities and in line with the Blue Economy. Since the success of the activities is highly dependent on the structural and ecological performance of the barriers, the project will also include the design and testing of low-impact technologies for underwater monitoring. The expected results will be aimed at knowledge transfer from the research world to the business world. Joint guidelines for stakeholders will be established, including a Code of Conduct, as well as a White Paper on the use of Adriatic reefs, including a specific plan for future projects. The ADRIREEF partnership, composed of local governments, regional agencies, private and public Research Centers, has long experience in implementing community projects and pursuing Blue Economy goals.

Research Projects

The research activities of the Institute are carried out in the context of research, development and innovation projects, both national and international, based on regional funding programs (POR FEAMPA - Regional Operational Program of the European Maritime Affairs Fisheries Fund and Aquaculture and POR FESR - Regional Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund) or ministerial (PRIN - Projects of relevant national interest, PNRA - National Research Program in Antarctica, PO FEAMPA - National Operational Program European Maritime Affairs Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund) , programs for European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg), direct funding programs of the European Commission (Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe, Life, JPI - Joint Programming Initiatives, ERA-NET Cofund) and thematic collaboration initiatives managed by international organizations such as, for example , the FAO - GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean). The Institute also develops funded projects in the context of collaborations with private companies in the sectors of the blue economy as well as technology transfer and research results. Research projects, mainly of a collaborative nature, are developed through a wide network of partners that include major Italian and foreign research institutions and universities.
