IRBIM DAY 2023
Two days of updates and scientific insights for CNR-IRBIM staff, in Mazara del Vallo
The IRBIM Days 2023 were opened by the Director of the Department of Earth System Sciences and Technologies for the Environment, Fabio Trincardi and the IRBIM Director Gian Marco Luna. At the opening, the IRBIM community was updated on the activities of the various locations of the Institute, on the new entries of PhD students, researchers and administrative staff. From a strictly logistical point of view: the highlights of the 2023 report were certainly the publication of the tender for the new headquarters in Ancona; the PNRR-EMBRC_up investment for the outdoor aquaculture plant in Messina; the reopening of the dialogue on a new laboratory for the Mazara del Vallo headquarters and then the plan to relaunch the Lesina headquarters with the works for the construction of the guesthouse. The scientific activities were contextualized at the international level with the most important issues such as climate change, management of marine ecosystems, aquaculture and fisheries, marine biodiversity and European biodiversity strategy, sustainable blue economy, and the Nature restoration law. These are the topics also addressed by the numerous internationally renowned invited speakers; during the IRBIM Days 2023, in fact, the following intervened: Jean-Noël Druon from the Joint Research Centre with a lecture entitled: ”The benefits of dynamic ocean co-management for a sustainable fisheries sector and the preservation of our ecosystems; Pierpaolo Falco from the Marche Polytechnic University who spoke about “Oeanography of the Mediterranean Sea: variability and expectations . And again Warren M. Potts from Rhodes University, South Africa with the presentation titled: “FFishing with hook and line reduces the potential for physiological adaptation of fishes to the impacts of climate change”; Chiara Lombardi from ENEA who spoke about “Regenerative Approaches in Blue Economy, the case of Smart Bay Santa Teresa and also Constantinos C. Mylonas from the Hellenic Center for Marine Research with a lecture on “Reproductive behavior and parental contribution of meagre (Argyrosomus regius) in aquaculture conditions, in relation to sound production during spawning”. There was no lack of space for speeches by the administrative secretary, Massimo Virgili, members of the Projects Office and newly hired colleagues in IRBIM and the awarding of the IRBIM Poster Price 2023 to Lorenzo Zacchetti (IRBIM-Ancona).
