Angelo Perilli

Researcher in Oceanography at CNR-IRBIM in Oristano. He holds a degree in Physics (1992) from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He began his research career at CNR-IFA in Rome, working on satellite remote-sensing data processing and scientific software development for satellite image analysis, including ESA projects.
Since 1994, he has worked in marine ecological modelling, at the International Marine Centre (IMC) and since 1998 at CNR-IAMC, developing and implementing physical-biological and Lagrangian models for the study of planktonic marine ecosystems. During this period, he collaborated with Imperial College London, where he also worked as a Visiting Scientist.
Since 2008, his research has focused mainly on physical oceanography, integrating in situ, satellite and numerical model data to investigate marine dynamics. He currently develops and applies Eddy Detection and Tracking methods (hEDT) to identify and track mesoscale oceanographic structures in the Mediterranean Sea and the Southern Ocean.
More recently, he has developed an interdisciplinary research line investigating marine animal movements in relation to oceanographic variability and mesoscale and larger-scale structures. By integrating animal trajectories with oceanographic observations, satellite data and numerical models, he investigates the links between environmental dynamics, animal movement and spatial use. This work includes the development of an encounter-based approach to identify and characterise interactions between marine animals and oceanographic structures, with applications to the study of animal spatial dynamics and pelagic ecosystems, including their relationship with seamounts and other oceanographic features.
