Riduzione della mortalità della tartaruga marina Caretta caretta nelle attività di pesca professionale
Alessandro Lucchetti from CNR IRBIM won the LIFE+ Excellence Award for the European LIFE Project TartaLife, “Reduction of the mortality of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta in professional fishing activities” (code LIFE12 NAT/IT/937). The project ran from October 1, 2013, to September 30, 2018, and its main objective was to reduce the mortality from accidental capture (bycatch) of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) caused by professional fishing gear, especially in the Italian Mediterranean. The project promoted the use of innovative solutions, such as UV-LEDs (ultraviolet lights) applied to fishing nets, which proved effective in reducing the accidental capture (bycatch) of turtles without compromising fishing performance. The LIFE+ Excellence Award is an important European-level recognition that celebrates the most outstanding and successful LIFE projects for their contribution to nature conservation and the environment.
