Project to develop sites and infrastructures related to Apulian aquaculture and to reduce the environmental impacts of interventions

Aquaculture in Italy boasts the presence of leading enterprises in the sector, producing annually a total of about 141 thousand tons of fish products in fresh and marine waters worth about 393 million of euros, with about 6,899 employees directly involved (MiPAAF – PSA, 2014). The sector is expected to have a positive growth trend up to 2025, amounting to 37% over the baseline figure, i.e., that reported to the 2013. The identification of new areas for aquaculture activities, together with the revisiting of the framework administrative and concessions, will help boost the competitiveness of regional productions, compared with low-cost and highly differentiated foreign productions. IRBIM CNR is participating in the project through the Secondary Office in Lesina dealing with the identification of marine-coastal areas most suitable to be allocated for shellfish farming, in relation to the oceanographic and trophic parameters of the waters, to productive parameters of the industry, to the potential development of infrastructure and services, as well as in Relating to the economic and management aspects of industry-related activities and also health and environmental sustainability in the Apulia Region.

The research activities of the Institute are carried out in the context of research, development and innovation projects, both national and international, based on regional funding programs (POR FEAMPA - Regional Operational Program of the European Maritime Affairs Fisheries Fund and Aquaculture and POR FESR - Regional Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund) or ministerial (PRIN - Projects of relevant national interest, PNRA - National Research Program in Antarctica, PO FEAMPA - National Operational Program European Maritime Affairs Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund) , programs for European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg), direct funding programs of the European Commission (Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe, Life, JPI - Joint Programming Initiatives, ERA-NET Cofund) and thematic collaboration initiatives managed by international organizations such as, for example , the FAO - GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean). The Institute also develops funded projects in the context of collaborations with private companies in the sectors of the blue economy as well as technology transfer and research results. Research projects, mainly of a collaborative nature, are developed through a wide network of partners that include major Italian and foreign research institutions and universities.
