The Messina main office was founded over a century ago, on 10 December 1916 as the Central Institute of Marine Biology, following the establishment of the Royal Thalassographic Committee. The Ancona office was founded in 1968 as a Laboratory of Fishing Technology, then the Research Institute on Maritime Fishing (IRPEM), and is the first Institute in the country to deal with fisheries sciences. The Mazara Research Center was founded in 1982 as the Institute of Technology of Fishing and Fish (ITTP), and has always developed a strong interaction with the homologous Ancona site on fisheries sciences.
